About Institution of Civil Engineers (India)

Civil Engineering is the oldest of the Engineering profession. Today the profession offers opportunities for involvement in a wide variety of its sub-disciplines. The profession touches almost every aspect of our lives and gives ample opportunity to make significant contribution for the betterment of the Society. Infrastructural development has become synonymous with the progress of any country.

Dedicated to the purpose of maintaining and promoting the status of Civil Engineering/ Architectural Engineering as an ideal profession the Institution of Civil Engineers (India) came into being to imbibe the characteristics which are fundamental to the successful pursuit of Civil Engineering/ Architectural Engineering career. The Institution aims to train and educate budding Engineers and Architects of high caliber who are sound in theory and practice.

The Institution of Civil Engineers (India) Society which is registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 was created by the Indian Institute of Engineering Studies & Welfare Society, Ludhiana.

The Government of India has given recognition to the Technician Membership Examination conducted by the ICE(I) as equivalent to Diploma and Degree in Engineering respectively. Te syllabi followed by the ICE (I) is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. Association of Indian Universities, GATE, Union Public Service Commission & various States & many more Organizations / Depts. Have given recognition to the Examinations conducted by ICE (I) for purposes of employment to the posts & services & for pursuing higher studies.

Admission & Examination of ICE

By virtue of the authority vested in the Institution of Civil Engineers (India) by the Govt. of India, the Institution conducts Part I and Part II Examinations and Architectural Engineering and Section A and Section B Examinations for Associate Membership in Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering.


The Institution conducts the Examinations in June and December every year. The Institution may, however, change the frequency and timings if necessary. The Institution maintains reliability, validity and credibility of its Examinations. In order to achieve this objective, several in-built checks and balances are kept in the system.


  1. Eligibility and last date for Registration for Examination : Candidates working in organizations engaged in the profession of Civil Engineering/ Architectural Engineering are permitted to appear in the Examinations conducted by the Institution in conformity with their eligibility of educational qualifications. Application for registration for Examinations should be submitted through proper channel.

  2. Enrollment of Candidates :
    June Examination    December Examination
    Upto 15th April    Upto 15th October

    Enrollment Fee and Examination Fee : As prescribed by the Institution and as mentioned in the respective form.

    Examination fee once paid is neither refunded nor transferred to a subsequent Examination or to any other account except in case of rejection of an application.


  3. Examination Centers : The Examination Centers are fixed as per the decision of the Institution. However the Examinations are held in the capital city of the respective State as far as possible.

  4. Scrutiny Committee : There is a scrutiny committee consisting of three members of the Institution to determine the eligibility of the candidate or otherwise before the issuance of hall tickets to the candidates.

  5. Identity Card : Each candidate for examination for Associate/Technician Member grade of the Institution shall be provided with an Identity Card indicating therein his/her name, examination to be taken up by him, Enrollment number, address and photograph.

  6. Hall Tickets to the Candidates : Each candidate who is found to be eligible to sit for the Examination is issued a hall ticket indicating his particulars duly attested by the Institution, and also indicating the Examination Center with its complete address. No candidate will be allowed entry in the Examination Hall without Hall Ticket & Identity card.

  7. Date Sheet : The Institution will issue Date Sheet for the Examination, which will be communicated to all the students found eligible to sit for the Examination. The date sheet will be sent to the candidates along with the hall tickets and will also be displayed at the officials website of the Institution.

  8. Examinations Timings : The Examination will be organized in Morning and Evening shifts.

  9. Declaration of Result : The Institution will compile the result and declare the same within 6-9 weeks after, the respective Examinations are over.

  10. Total duration to pass the Examination : The candidates shall be required to pass the Examination within a specified period i.e. Technician Membership Part I in a maximum of 4 Years, Part II in a maximum of 6 Years and Associate Membership Section A in a maximum of 5 Years, Section B in a maximum of 5 Years.

  11. Passing Criteria : Minimum 40% marks in each paper and 50 % marks in aggregate in final attempt. A candidate securing 50% or more marks in a subject shall be exempted from appearing in that subject again and the marks so obtained by him/her shall be carried over. He / she shall be required and allowed to reappear only in that subject where he/she has secured less than 50% marks.

  12. Duration of Question Paper and Medium of Examination : 3 Hours each and Medium of Examination shall be English.

Diploma in Civil Engineering (TMICE)

Technician Membership Examination (Part I & Part II)

(Diploma in Civil Engineering)

Eligibility : 10th Pass(Admission to Part I)    Duration : 3 Years(6 Semesters)
Direct 2nd Year (Lateral Entry) admission for 12th (Sci with PCM) or 12th (MCVC) / ITI with relevant Civil experience after clearing qualifying examination.

Certification Requirement :


  1. Part I Examination will consist of 6 subjects. The candidate can appear in maximum of 4 subjects in one attempt.

  2. Part II Examination will consist of 9 subjects in respect of Civil Engineering and 10 Subjects in Architectural Engineering. The candidate can appear in maximum of 4 Subjects in one attempt.

  3. On successful completion of all subjects of the Part II examination, the candidate will work on a project related to the field of Civil Engineering/Architectural Engineering. The project duration will be one semester i.e. approximately 6 months.

  4. The candidate has passed Part I and Part II examination of the institution and has an experience of three years working in an organization engaged in promoting Civil/Architectural Engineering profession.

  5. The candidate shall have had such Practical Experience including experience in a position of responsibility in Professional Engineering or part thereof, as may be required.

The Practical Training for Technician Membership will be carried out in AICTE approved Polytechnic/Engineering College and the practical assessment will be conducted by the concerned Polytechnic/Engineering Colleges wherever the candidate has under gone Practical Training.
The Project report for Technician Membership is to be submitted through the Principal or Head of the Department of Civil Engineering/Architectural Engineering of AICTE approved Polytechnic/Engineering College.
On meeting the requirements as above, a candidate becomes eligible for the Technician Membership Grade of the ICE (I) and is entitled to write T.Engg. (Civil/Architecture) after his/her name.
