What is advertising? Advertising is a technique that many companies use for marketing to encourage and persuade their audience to take an action. Advertisements can be seen all around us; they are such a common part of life that many times we look right pass them without even realizing it. Many methods are used by companies to lure the audience being targeting to purchase a product. Whether its television commercials, magazine advertisements, bill boards; they are all trying to accomplish the same thing. They try to use clever ways to manipulate you to buy or rebuy their products. An advertisement of high quality should do more than just please the eye. The measurement of the effectiveness of an advertisement is its ability to strike a need from a customer and present a viable solution to it. As the consumers, we many times fall right into companies advertising tricks and we don’t even know why.
The ad I choose to analyze was from Star Magazine which was published recently this year. This magazine targets mostly woman ranging from teenagers to adults who are fans of celebrity culture. Although I am sure some men do read Star, it is pretty evident that this magazine is targeted more towards woman, which is why it is almost all about celebrity drama and different fashion trends for woman. Almost all the advertisements within the magazine are for different make up brands and different hair products. The targeted age group is not made as clear and that is because Star is for a wide group of female ages. This is supported by the American Media Incorporation which states that the median age of buyers of is 38 (AMI). Since there are a wide variety of ages that read Star, it would make sense that you would see cigarette advertisements with in it since such a large group of people do smoke.
