“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”
Connie is a pretty, fifteen year old girl with long dark blonde hair, and like many girls her age, she cares only about how she looks and how people look at her and see her. She’s very self-absorbed, judgmental, and seems very insecure. The relationship between herself and her family isn’t great, especially between her mother and her. Her mother is always comparing Connie and her sister June, and because of this everything about Connie had two sides to it. One side for when she’s home, and one side for when she’s out with her friends. Because of these two sides to Connie, she comes face to face with the evil side of danger, “Arnold Friend.” Coming face to face with Arnold Friend, causes Connie to have an epiphany.
Connie is always looking at herself in the mirror every chance she got. Her mother was always scolding her about it, “Stop gawking at yourself, who are you? You think you’re so pretty?” she would say to her. (Oates 323) Connie knew she was pretty, and to a girl her age that’s everything. Her mother was also always comparing her to her sister June, “Why don’t you keep your room clean like your sister? How’ve you got your hair fixed, what the hell stinks? Hair spray? (Oates 323) You don’t see your sister using that junk.” Connie hated when her mother would do this. She would say she hated her mother and wish she were dead. But when she has to make a decision on whether to jeopardize her own life or her mother’s, she chooses to put hers in jeopardy.
When it came to describing her sister June, Connie thought of her as just a 24 year old secretary who still lives at home with her parents. She was plain, chunky, and steady. And Connie didn’t think much of her sister or her mother. But, when it came down to her father, she didn’t say much about him. But that he worked a lot and when he came home all he wanted to do was eat his dinner...
