Satire is a literary genre used to ridicule a folly or human vice in order to expose or correct it. The object of satire is mostly human frailty, people, ideas and institutions and at large society itself. Satire is normally supposed to be humorous; its greater purpose is constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon. Example of satire include Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" which satirizes the English people, making them seem dwarfish in their ability to deal with large thoughts, issues, or deeds.   Animal farm is a satire through which Orwell indirectly attacks on the events of the Russian revolution and the totalitarian regime. Through the book animal farm Orwell voices his pessimistic belief that revolution only changes the tyrants however the system remains the same. He also feels that total equality is only a dream which cannot be achieved as human nature itself is corrupt and thus the idea of utopia is simply a dream. The more clever and skilful lust for power and thus the stance of the revolution is twisted into a darker meaning and loses it original pure intentions. In the novel the dream, of a classless society where all are equal and free is shattered and replaced by the reality of poverty and hardship of a dictatorial regime which is in sharp contrast to that of the Russian revolution where some are “more equal than others”   (Orwell, 1955, p.114). The novel highlights how ruling bodies with privileges and absolute power are corrupted and there is a disintegration of values and the voices of others are suppressed.

The book begins with the old major telling the animals his dream for a new life for the animals and encourages them to take action against the cruel farmer Mr Jones. Shortly afterwards the major dies and the animals rebel and drive the drunken and irresponsible Mr Jones from the farm and rename it animal farm.
