William Faulkner uses language in a unique way in his book As I Lay Dying. He uses it to illustrate each of his characters' thoughts and emotions. Faulkner uses several rhetorical strategies in the passage. He uses stream of consciousness to reveal what Cash Bundren thinks and feels. Faulkner also uses rationalization and diction to make this soliloquy more powerful. Logos and pathos are also used in the passage.
Faulkner clearly demonstrates stream of consciousness in this passage because the reader gets a feel for what he is thinking and what he is feeling. He uses stream of consciousness to help fix the limitations that language puts on expressing thought.   One example of it is when Cash says, “Sometimes I aint so sho who's got ere a right to say when a man is crazy and when he aint. Sometimes I think it aint none of us pure crazy and aint none of us pure sane until the balance of us talks him that-a-way.” The reader knows how he feels about how society doesn't have the right to assume a man is crazy. This quote demonstrates how Cash thinks that someone doesn't become crazy until society makes that person crazy.
Faulkner's character Cash rationalizes with himself about what Darl, his brother, did. He says, “I can almost believe he done right in a way. But I dont reckon nothing excuses setting fire to a man's barn and endangering his stock and destroying his property. That's how I reckon a man is crazy. That's how he cant see eye to eye with other folks. And I reckon that aint nothing else to do with him but what the most folks say is right.” Cash thinks his brother may have done the right thing, but from the point of the society and their views of what is socially acceptable, he was acting irrationally and crazy. Cash also rationalizes the actions of his brother by saying this, “Because Jewel is too hard on him.” Saying this makes it seem like just because Jewel was hard on Darl makes it acceptable to go destroy other people's property and setting fire to a...
