An aspect of psychology that interests me is Behaviorism, this is a school of thought based on the assumption that learning occurs through environmental interactions. One well-known aspect of Behaviorism is classical conditioning. This was discovered by Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov, classical conditioning is a learning process that occurs through associations between naturally occurring stimulus, and the environment. In Pavlov's experiment with dogs, the neutral stimulus was a tone, and the naturally occurring reflex was salivating in response to food. By associating the tone with food, the sound of the tone would cause the dog to salivate. To understand more about how classical conditioning works, I had to become more familiar with the basic ideas associated with it. One of these ideas is unconditioned stimulus, it is a stimulus that naturally triggers a response. Another is the unconditioned response, this is the unlearned response that occurs naturally in response to the unconditioned stimulus. Also the conditioned stimulus, which when associated with the neutral stimulus, triggers a conditional response. Lastly the conditioned response, this is the learned response to the previously neutral stimulus. For my experiment I am going to test the use of classical conditioning on a woman named Jane. Jane is clinically obese and needs to lose weight in order to live a healthier life. She has started exercising regularly, but her habit of eating McDonalds for lunch on a daily basis has affected her weight loss negatively. She needs to break this unhealthy eating habit, to reach her goal weight.
