Bill C-300: Big nickel and dimed

      Canadian mining, gas and oil companies take up to 60% of the world total extracting industry. Much of this extracting is being done in developing nations, where Canadian companies actually help some of the local impoverished residents by building roads, schools, creating jobs and even stimulating their economy. But at the same time there are also many allegations of Canadian companies causing severe environmental damage to fragile habitats, forced displacement of local people and even rape and murder. Such incidents have occurred in Ghana where due to privatizations, tax breaks, deregulations and so on, Canadian gold mining companies are soaking in the all the wealth and leaving Ghanaians with little to show. In response to such incidents and many others around the world, Liberal MP John McKay proposed Bill C-300 in February 2009. This bill would require all Canadian extracting companies to become more socially responsible. This is not to say that a lot Canadian companies are irresponsible but since Canada dominates the extracting industry there are bound to be a few outliers who completely ignore corporate social responsibility. By April 2009, this bill passed the second reading in the House of Commons but by only by a few votes. In the coming few weeks Parliament will decide the outcome of Bill C-300. If such a bill is to pass it will regulate Canadian extractive companies that are doing work in developing nations, would create a new set of guidelines that would emphasize on human rights, safety and environmental restoration, and create means by which local residents can send in complaints to the Ministry of foreign affairs, that would be taken seriously and investigated if necessary. If this bill passes, it can mean only good to an industry that is heavily criticized for destroying the environment and disrupting local residents. But still, there are many people who oppose this bill; it barely passed the second reading...
