What is biological psychology? The name derives from the Greek words psyche meaning ‘mind’ and logos meaning ‘reason’. Psychology means the reasoning (or study) of the mind. (Aron,Aron,and Coups,2007) In spite of this, only a small number of psychologists would go by this meaning nowadays. Just for a little history, the study of psychology came into the picture around the eighteenth century as a division of philosophy focused on explaining the processes of thought by means of the technique of introspection. Luckily, a more investigational method to psychology started to surface in the late nineteenth century that paid more attention to mental phenomena and on behavior, as well. This type of experimentation could be observed and measured. The importance on experimentation and measurement has continued to the present day and most psychologists would most likely describe psychology as the scientific or experimental study of behavior and mental life. (Aron, Aron, and Coups,2007) Biological psychology is the area of science that begins to describe behavior in relation to biology, and since the most significant structure ruling behavior is the brain, biological psychology is thus the study of the brain and how it causes or relates to behavior. Biological psychology says that every thought, feeling and behavior must have a physical or neural basis in the brain and that mind and brain are associated. This is therefore the primary belief of which biological psychology is found. (Aron, Aron, and Coups,2007)
Some of the first people to grasp that the brain was the organ of the mind and behavior were the Ancient Greeks. One of the earliest of these Greek philosophers was Plato. He suggested that the brain was the organ of reasoning. Many disagreed. The Greeks were conscious of the main shape of the brain, gained by animal dissection, and of its ventricles.
