1There are several main causes that lead to school shootings. It is hard to narrow it down to one specific cause, but the one that stands out the most is bulling. Bullying is defined as the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate, or aggressively to impose domination over others. Bulling is being considered an epidemic here in America and stopping it has proven to be a daunting task. On a recent survey, the results showed that 1 in 4 kids are being bullied every day and 77% of students are bullied mentally, verbally, & physically. Cyberbullying statistics are rapidly increasing as well. Each day 160,000 students miss school for fear of being bullied and 100,000 students carry a gun to school. A staggering 282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month.
2School shootings date all the way back to 1760 when 4 American Indians entered a school house and killed the school master along with 9 or 10 children. This just goes to show that schools have been a common ground for shooting for many years and there is still no concrete system in play to stopping it. The deadliest school shooting in U.S history took place in Virginia Tech when Seung-Hui Cho opened fire on other students and faculty, killing 32 people and wounding many others before killing himself. The number of shootings in the last 10 years has doubled and if this trend continues, schools might become more like prisons.
3In most cases, bulling starts at home with the parents. Many kids are around parents who are very violent towards themselves and others. Parents are like role models to kids. If a child sees their parents acting a certain way, then the kid will also think it is ok. Another problem is that some parents just don’t care today. They have no rules or boundaries for their kids and other kids and parents have to suffer due to that parents insufficient parenting skills.
