Choose one live theatre production you have seen during your course where the actors
created moments in the play that you found comic and/or tense. Choose one actor from
this live production.

Describe in detail how your chosen actor used voice, movement and facial expressions
to create comedy and/or tension in at least one scene or section. (20 marks)

The production I saw was “The Woman in Black” which was performed at the Everyman Theatre in Chletenham.

The actor I have chosen is Antony Eden who played the role of the Actor. He created both tension and comedy in the opening scene.

The play began with the House lights still up and the stage bare except for a wicker basket and an empty metal clothes rail. Antony Eden made his first entrance from stage left. At this point in the play he is acting as an elderly man, Arthur Kipps, who has written an account of an experience he had as a young man. Eden showed the audience the age of the character by moving slowly and stiffly as he walked to centre stage on the proscenium arch stage.

Eden was wearing a black frock coat, black waistcost and trousers.   He had a very striaght and upright posture. He was holding a large leather bound book in both hands in front of him. Eden built suspense and tension by taking off his hat and walking slowly downstage.

He read the first words, “It was nine thirty on Christmas Eve” in a very quiet and monotonous voice. This was comic as the audience had been expecting a dramatic opening and it immediately defused the tension which had been built.

At the end of the first speech the Actor was interrupted by a shout from the other performer who is in the audience. “This is intended to be of interest I assume.” Eden showed his character’s embarrassment by looking down at the stage. When Eden was speaking to the other actor his voice became more animated, especially on the line, “But that’s impossible.” He stressed the word “impossible” by raising his voice....
