Community Health Advocacy Project – Part I

There are an endless amount of areas of public health concerns in today’s society.   One of these aggregate with a health concern that interests myself is childhood obesity.   The health of this group is an important aspect in today’s world portions are getting larger, and fast food restaurants have become the norm to the fast pace society lifestyle.   The importance of childhood obesity has both a professional and personal interest for me.   The belief is that genetics, behavioral, and environmental factors could potentially be considered related causes to childhood obesity.   From a personal standpoint I saw my spouse at age 39 put on excess body weight and from the genetic aspect his cholesterol and triglyceride monitoring were not in check and he was diagnosed with narrowing of the arteries within his heart and lead to an operation of a quadruple bypass at age forty. Professionally, while working as a school nurse, it is a requirement to screen all children for height and weight each year, and monitor Body Mass Index (BMI) percentages.   One student in particular is of deep concern, he is a 4th grader and weighs 284 pounds.   these are multiple aggregates, or subsets, of people from the general population with a common health concern, defining a distinct area of not only strength, but also need.
