Roles and Functions of Social Workers
Social workers have many roles and functions as well as working in different setting such as schools or hospitals. The profession is aimed at helping those that have problems in their lives such as neglect, disability or mental health issues. According to International Federation of Social Work (IFSW) ‘Social work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Utilizing theories of human behavior and social systems, social work intervenes at the point where people interact with their environments. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work (IFSW, 2001 cited in Horner, 2007, p.2).   The definition describes some of the roles and function social workers have, therefore   it is vital that social workers have the skills and education to help those that are vulnerable (Horner 2007). This essay will discuss what these key roles are including assessing and planning. It will continue by describing what the key values and principles of social work are and why they are important. Then it will examine how social policies are related to social work in terms of how a policy changes the roles of social workers, as well as how social work influences changes in policy making. Finally, it will consider the expectations of social workers and the importance of both material and emotional support in social work.

Although there were many charities, as early as the fourteen-century, that helped the poor, the vast majority of care was provided by religious places such as churches and monasteries (Horner 2007).
