Tom DeLay, a former Republican House of Representative member for Texas, underwent a cosmetic surgery to have his droopy eyelids tightened up. According to an ophthalmic technician based in Washington D.C., the condition that DeLay suffered form is referred to as ptosis which is very common with people with advanced age (AP, 2004). The technician also explains, that the condition can also be caused by strokes, surgeries, trauma as well as other health issues (AP, 2004).
After the operation, DeLay expressed that his vision had improved and could see things more clearly than before (AP, 2004). Through medical evidence, it can be construed that in deed DeLay had a legitimate cause for undergoing the cosmetic surgery. Evidently it helped him improve his vision a fact that has been supported by medical experts. However, on a political angle, the operation does take a fishy angle especially with all the accusations that had been raised against the former Congressman.
The main issue behind the operation is not even the necessity of the operation; rather it is whether public funds were used to meet the cost of the surgery. To help determine the truth, his character will have to be investigated.
Firstly, DeLay had been known to engage in tax evasion strategies as well as not paying up his debts. Given his character, DeLay was known to be a very crafty person. His background clearly suggests this, because the IRS had previously held him liable for tax liens. Additionally, he had failed to pay two of his associates until the associates had to file charges against him. His background and present character described a person who always violated the expected social norms. Therefore, it becomes very easy to construe everything that the former Congressman engaged into at least construes some form of corporate crime. His...
