Health, according to World Health Organisation is a state of complete physical, social and mental well-being and nor completely the absence of any disease or infirmity. More usually, it can be considered as the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a human being (World Health Organisation, 2003). Obesity according to Department of Health (2009) is a condition characterised by increased body fat. It increases the likelihood of various diseases, more specifically cardiovascular, type-2 diabetes, and obstructive sleep disorders, Cancer, Asthma and Osteoarthritis. The problem of childhood obesity in the United Kingdom is a global trend (Department of Health, 2009). There are around 1 million obese children in the United Kingdom and around the world; there are over 22 million under-five children who are obese. The goal of the government is to reverse the rising tide of obesity and overweight in children (Information for Health Centre and Social Care, 2010). This essay will identify the current health promotion initiatives implemented in the United Kingdom and critically discuss how they can support the health and well-being of children in the identified age group of 1-10 years.
To reduce the growing incidence of childhood obesity in the United Kingdom, the Department of Health, World Health Organisation and National Health Services are examining causative factors. The study by WHO (2003) indicated that cultural environment, changing social patterns and urbanisation as the global factors influencing negatively on the health of children. It is highly interesting to note that the data from the United Kingdom population survey offered weight to the theory of social and cultural behavioural patterns as causative factors in life style decisions. Report by Acheson (1998) indicated that the prevalence of childhood obesity was higher in the lower socio-economic groups.
