.The Conservatives were the largest party, but fell short of the 326 seats needed to form a majority government by nine seats. Labour lost more than 80 seats and the Liberal Democrats lost five seats overall. The main issues of this election were the economy, immigration and defence.
As previously mentioned there were a few key issues which the result of the election rested on, these issues had more of an effect than to be expected due to the TV debates (the first of its kind in Britain). The tv debates had such a large effect on voting behaviour due to the order in which the three debates were televised, the first debate was on the economy the polls after the first debate suggested that Nick Clegg had won the first debate, the second debate topic was domestic policies which Clegg came out with a narrow victory in polls. However things were not looking too good for Clegg due to the topics of the last debate were trident, immigration and the EU. These issues that would lose liberals allot of votes, as their policies on these issues were relatively weak compared to the Tories or labour.
The conservatives won most of the middle class votes and labour of working class voters but a fall in support in C2 and DE voters. People in the public sector didn’t vote conservative and people in the private sector were allot more likely to vote conservative.
There was no consistent swing in terms of geographical location , however a north south divide emerged as the conservatives did better in the south and overtook labour in the midlands. Labour did best in Scotland with an increased share of the vote, where as the conservatives had only one seat in Scotland.
