Imagine a five year old girl lying in a grass hut bloody from the waist down, legs bound and what is left of her female parts on the ground next to her and her mother telling that this was her special day—a rite passage to womanhood. This day faces nearly every girl in Somalia, which they cannot contest nor is the procedure irreversible after it is done. It is called female circumcision or also known as female genital cutting (FGC). This practice dates back nearly two thousand years and it is estimated that 120 to 140 million girls world-wide go through the ritual of female circumcision.
Unfortunately, these very young girls do not have a choice in this ritual that is performed on them. The problem of female circumcision is the extremely serious health risks and the psychological problems that will follow these girls for the rest of their lives. One solution to this problem is to pass a law to ban FGC world-wide. Another solution is to educate the women to the dangers and let it be a personal choice rather than one made for them.
All across the world young girls are being subjected to a ritual know as FGC. Somalia has one of the highest FGC rates, ninety-eight percent, than any other country (Momoh p11). There are four types of FGC: type one is the excision of the prepuce, with or without excision of the clitoris; type 2 is the excision of the clitoris with partial or total removal of the labia minora; type three is the most severe of the four and is the excision of all the external genitalia and stitching/narrowing of the vaginal opening; type four is the pricking, piercing or incising of the clitoris and/or labia. This rite of passage is to prepare the young girl for duties as a wife and mother. This procedure is not a choice, but mandatory, that nearly every girl must go through.
