Throw of the Dice
When does Passion make you do things you don’t want to do? Passion makes us do crazy things. Even though ‘passion’ is just one word, there are so many feelings behind it that make us who we are. Having strong feelings for something shows us what we truly care for and love. Dealing with passion is almost like playing a card game, in which you gamble with your feelings to see what you care for the most. Passion has a strong effect and can cause two people to do things that the never thought would be done. There are so many turns and twists while playing this game that eventually threw the two main characters off. “The Passion” by Jeanette Winterson demonstrates the investigation of passion that occurs in both Henri and Villanelle lives. They both take a gamble with their feeling, which leads them to discover the true meaning of passion.
The game of passion is demonstrated in the Zero Winter, when Henri falls in love with Villanelle. Henri has a strong passion for Villanelle as he starts falling in love with her, which is the beginning of their relationship. You see the pain that Villanelle goes through in her past relationships, which have gambled away her heart. Villanelle gambles with Henri’s feelings, which eventually make him go crazy. After making love, Henri confesses his love for Villanelle only to hear in return that she doesn’t feel the same way and can only see him as a brother. She calls him her brother and not lover, but when in the mood she leads him in passionate love. “I was angry. Whoever it is you fall in love with for the first time, not just love but be in love with, is the one who will always make you angry, the one you can't be logical about.” (Winterson) Henri is frustrated because he has these feelings that wont go away.
