There are 2 components of trade:
1) Markets
o the merging of historically distinct and separate national markets into one huge global market place
o tastes and preferences are converging, but on a superficial level.
o Globalization caveat: we are becoming more global except tastes, preferences, values, ethnicity, etc. create differences that prevent complete globalization
o trade barriers are falling
o i.e. auto industry, McDonald’s, etc
2) Production
o the sourcing of goods and services from locations around the globe to take advantage of national differences in the cost and quality of production (land, labor, capital)
2 big Driving forces
o the decline in barriers to the free flow of goods, services, and capital that has occurred since the end of WWII
      o barriers to trade include taxes, tariffs, limits on foreign direct investment
      o lower barriers to trade and investment mean:
            ▪ that firms can view the world, rather than a single country, as their market
            ▪ that firms can base production in the optimal location for that activity
o technological change- communication, information, and transportation
      o has made the globalization of markets a reality
      o important advances in:
            ▪ microprocessors and telecommunications
            ▪ the Internet and the World Wide Web
            ▪ transportation technology
      o lower transportation costs that enable firms to disperse production to economical, geographically separate locations
      o lower information processing and communication costs that enable firms to create and manage globally dispersed production systems
