What Wouldst Thou Do?:
Comparing and Contrasting Hamlet and Laertes

      Two of the main characters in the play Hamlet are Hamlet and Laertes. Hamlet is the son of the late King Hamlet. Laertes is the son of Polonius, the royal counselor of the land. The similarities and differences of Hamlet and Laertes are quite apparent when looking through the play and viewing it. There are also differences when it comes to Hamlet and Laertes. Hamlet and Laertes, develop as “foils,” or divergent characters. Throughout this essay, I will show how Hamlet and Laertes compare and contrast in ways of both having a death of their father, their love for Ophelia, and both personalities.
      When looking at the similarities between both Hamlet and Laertes we see that they both have to deal with the death of their fathers.  Hamlet and Laertes both display rash reactions when they become enraged. When Laertes discovers his father has been murdered, Laertes immediately assumes the one who is at fault is Claudius. When he thinks this thought Laertes speculation’s are he unconsciously tries get even with the death of Polonius. We can see in the book with Act 4, Scene 5, lines 128-134, where Laertes speaks to himself and his plans to become even, "To hell, allegiance! vows, to the blackest devil! Conscience and grace, to the profoundest pit! I dare damnation: to this point I stand, that both worlds I give to negligence, let come what comes; only I'll be revenged most thoroughly for my father.”
      Second similarity found is, both Laertes and Hamlet have a strong love for Ophelia. When Laertes leaves to go to France he first makes an attempt to talk to Ophelia about her love relationship with Hamlet. The reason for trying to get his feelings across to Ophelia about her connections with Hamlet is because he is aware of his true feelings and intensions and does not want Ophelia to be...
