History of the NFL
Attention Catcher- Vince Lombardi once said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand”.
Thesis- In this speech, I am going to inform you about the history of the National Football League.
Preview-To begin, I will let you know how football started in America. Then I will inform you about how football started the first professional league. Finally, I am going to let you know how the national football league has changed over the years.
I. Main point-How football started in America.
a. Even at first when people started playing any kind of ball game, an association with American football could be made dating way back to ancient Egyptian times. However, the general consensus is that the first traces of what later would develop into a multimillion dollar industry; football or rugby, began in Europe. It is easily conceivable that England would act as the breeding-ground for the sport, but early signs of rugby can be found in all the major medieval powers of Europe as said by “American football and its heritage”
b. As said by A History of Football, “Walter Camp who attended Yale from 1876 to 1882 was coined as the “Father of Football”. He contributed multiple changes from rugby and soccer to American football. One of those changes was that one side retained undisputed possession of the ball, until the side gives up the ball as a result of its own violations. He also created the line of scrimmage and the quarterback position”.
Transition: So while football probably started out to be more of a pastime for its players it quickly became a competitive sport and gained recognition as a professional league.
