How Has Racism Affected You and Your Loved Ones?
Although we live in modern times where it seems that racism has completely ended, everyday there is evidence of discrimination in this country. Wheresoever it may be in big cooperate offices, small restaurants, or even local malls, people of the minority group are discriminated against, on the sole basis of their skin color all the time.
I recall a time vividly when I witnessed racial discrimination against my own family, when my brother was denied an apartment because he was black. The disturbing part is that my brother called earlier in the day and the owner assured him views of apartments. However, once we got there it was a different story. Suddenly all of his apartments were “filled up”. The owner had no idea that the young man he talked to on the phone was black and educated.
After leaving the owner’s office honestly I felt betrayed. I was almost deluded into thinking that every white male secretly felt this way, and that black people would always be hated because of their skin color. I started thinking about the times of segregation where things like this were seen every day, and were much more evident than now, as it is illegal. I was relatively young but I was still upset! I felt vulnerable, as if no one was on my family’s side. At that naïve age I thought I had outlived the whole racist mentality. That day I got a rude awakening.
Racism has not only affected my family, but it has also affected me to the point where I felt my life was in danger. A small town in Mt. Carmel, Illinois where there is a large population of racist people and Very few black people. I was at a retreat for a couple of days. A couple of friends and I were getting food late one night after returning to our hotel, and there were a lot of pickup trucks in the lot. As we were walking back to the hotel with our food people were yelling things out of their pick-up...
