When it comes to the debate of whether or not Feminism is still relevant in modern society, many believe it is not. Feminism often brings up negative connotations to those who don’t fully comprehend how almost every issue can be a feminist issue. As stated before in the assignment instructions, patriarchal societies male children over female children all throughout history.   This is a feminist issue. Being born a female is dangerous in a number of ‘Third World’ countries, but is prevalent in China and India, two of the world’s largest populations. Infanticide is the unlawful killing of very young children.   Although male infanticide occurs, female infanticide is the majority of unlawful children deaths.
In 1979 China introduced a ‘One-child policy’, restricting urban couples to only one child.   A survey conducted in 2007 accounted approximately 36% of China’s population was subject to the ‘one-child’ policy. These figures, of course could misleading, given the nature of the Chinese government. China’s need to enforce a policy like the one-child policy was based to reduce economic, social and environmental problems due to population increase. Unfortunately there are deeper implications to population control. In a patriarchal society such as China, babies born as girls are seen as an economic burden. This has been a problem that existed before the introduction of the ‘one-child’ policy. In a patriarchal society men are usually the main income-earners, because Asian families typically live longer and the children end up taking care of their parents longer, men are usually favored and less likely to be killed. It is the norm in most cultures for parents to depend on their children to look after them in old age. In many of these cultures a girl leaves her parental family after marrying, resulting in a son “sticking” with the parents, increasing their resources.
