InvestorSoft is preparing to launch its one and only product, a subscription-based software service that will make it convenient and economical for companies to manage the investor relations portion of their website. The company’s founder faces an uphill battle in establishing InvestorSoft as a credible supplier to buyers who prefer dealing with large, reputable firms. His immediate challenge is to settle on a set of target customers, and determine whether InvestorSoft would be better off selling to them directly or through resellers who would bundle the software with other services. He must also develop pricing and promotional strategies that will secure a strong base of customers early on, in order to position the company for future growth. The case provides the basis for discussing core-marketing concepts such as customer analysis, target market selection, and marketing mix decisions in an entrepreneurial context.

InvestorSoft is a fully owned subsidiary of Optamedia Inc., a small but growing corporate communications firm that Chris Bolivar founded in 1999 at the age of 15.   Optamedia specialized in web design, web applications and brand strategy.   The company boasted a solid client list that includes Microsoft Canada, the “National Post” newspaper, biopharmaceutical firm Isotechnika, and Taxwiz, a Canadian producer of tax preparation software.

Optamedia currently employed four full-time staff members and three part-time designers and developers, all of whom could be drawn upon to work on the InvestorSoft project “as needed”.   Bolivar and two of the full-time employees dealt primarily with marketing and business functions, while the remaining staff focused on the technical and design work for the companies clients.   Optamedia’s annual revenues had reached $350,000 in 2004, and Bolivar had budgeted $25,000 to promote InvestorSoft over the next 12 months, over and above the cost of personnel selling.   Additionally, he could commit more resources if doing...
