Is Pyramid Highway a Death Trap?
There are many reasons why a person might start to veer off of the road. They might be tired, they are trying to grab something, or worst case scenario, they dumped their morning coffee on their lap. Many people do cross traffic lines or move into different lanes when driving for whatever reasons. When someone veers off the road or into another lane on a highway, the risk of an accident goes through the roof. Pyramid Highway in Sparks Nevada, is a place where veering off into a different lane could get one killed.
The problem with Pyramid Highway is that there is not a median separating the two directions of traffic. There have been many accidents in the past on this highway. It is one of the most dangerous places in town to drive. When driving on this highway, the speed limit is forty-five miles per hour to about fifty-five miles per hour, depending where you are on the highway. If one car was go drift into oncoming traffic and hit another car head-on, the speed of the accident would be about a hundred miles per hour. Accidents at that speed can be very fatal.
An accident happened on Pyramid Highway and it was a fatal one. According to a Trooper, Chuck Allen, an accident involved a 2004 Ford F-350 pick-up truck and a 2006 Subaru Outback wagon. Allen says it appears the accident was caused when the Subaru struck the pick-up, causing it to veer off the roadway and roll-over. The drivers of pick-up truck were not wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the truck. After hitting the truck, the Subaru traveled several hundred feet before it veered off the road, striking a rock, rolling over and then hitting a six-foot-tall fence. Both the driver and the passenger were extracted from the vehicle and were taken to the hospital.
