Unit Title:   How labelling and stigma can occur when working         with people with cognitive disorders and barriers to communication.

LABELLING

‘Labelling’ is placing individuals into a convenient group due to one particular aspect of their identity.   For example, such labels could include ‘black’, ‘disabled’, ‘female’, ‘gay’, etc. Often, labels are assigned to care service users in order to identify a common medical condition so as to ascertain whether a service provider is able to care for that condition (Sussex et. al., 2008, p.109), for example, individuals with cognitive impairment, EMI (Elderly Mentally Impaired) residents etc.   However, those involved in the day-to-day interaction with the individual should avoid simply responding to these broad labels and treat each person as a unique individual in order to minimise any barriers to communication.  

If someone is just treated as a label there can be a number of negative consequences.   Even ‘informal labels’ assigned to particular service users between care workers (and/or between other service users) – e.g. ‘someone who is awkward’, ‘someone who is difficult to communicate with’, ‘someone who is too noisy’ etc. – can have negative consequences (Open University, 2007, p.120).   Although a service user may not initially deserve such labels (they may just have a clash of personalities with the person doing the labelling), they may feel an expectation to conform to those labels (Moonie, 1996, pp.142-143) and eventually start to act in a manner implied by that label (Open University, 2007, p.120).   Such labels, if passed on, can also influence how new carers communicate and interact with the individual, denying the new carer the opportunity to get to know the service user as they really are.
