My Haven

The reason why Camp Blue Haven is so influential to me is because of the beautiful atmosphere, being surrounded by fellow believers, and the increase of my spiritual relationship with God. Looking out the window and seeing those trees canopying over the world barely letting a peek of bright blue sky through, I know it’s almost time. Almost time for me to return to my little safe place. As the rocks crunch underneath the circling tires I feel my heart start to drop. In my mind I picture the small patch of grass with the six horizontal logs that read “Camp Blue Haven” and without hesitation I know we have made it back again. As this annoyingly huge charter bus followed by two vans finally makes it across the famous Blue Haven bridge hauling 60 or more kids, we all are overcome by an enormous wave of relief. Relief that we can finally stand up and stretch our legs, and for some of us, relief that we no longer have to sit next to the person with really stinky feet.
Camp Blue Haven is tucked away in the mountains of Las Vegas, New Mexico. You can tell how tucked away it is by the unrecognizable town it’s located in. Every summer from the time I was in the third grade to a graduate of high school I attended Camp Blue Haven. Most people would say I had it memorized like the back of my hand and I would agree with them. This place was my second home. Before the excitement of being back at camp could actually set in, we all had to go through the obnoxious process of signing in. Waiting in line for what felt like five days just to get told what cabin you were in, who your counselor was, and telling the nurse if you had any critical life-threatening diseases. As soon as you left the registration office you had to sprint to the trailer and pray it was already unlocked so you could haul your belongings as quickly as possible to your cabin and claim the best bed.
