‘Natural law theory is an effective method to use when making ethical decisions,
Discuss’

St Thomas Aquinas used his understanding of Aristotle to develop his idea of Natural law. Aquinas believed we have a purpose to do well and avoid all kinds of evil. He believed that we know which actions are right and which are wrong through the use of reason, however in some circumstances bad logic could lead us the wrong moral choices. Aquinas developed the primary precepts, which follow from the idea of doing good and avoiding evil. The primary precepts are concerned with self preservation and preservation of innocent, education, reproduction, worshipping God and living in society.

Aquinas's view of reason as a tool for moral understanding and his idea of a common nature and morality for all people gives natural law that goes beyond any one religion or culture. This can be seen as a very positive aspect considering the disharmony that exists between cultures and societies which all uphold similar basic principles such as conserving life.

Natural moral law gives a concrete reason to be moral and provides a firm basis for individuals to refuse to cross moral boundaries. It also provides justification and support for those ideas popular in today's world such as human rights, whilst condemning actions such as torture, irrespective of the consequences. Natural law also provides a way of living, giving guidance on day-to-day questions on how we should be living life and also links fundamentally to principles of life. It provides a complete system of moral living.
