Obesity in America

With multiple types of non-nutritious food being easily accessible through fast food and low prices, it is easier for current day Americans to lead an unhealthy lifestyle, and eventually eat themselves to death. Obesity is a problem in which more than two thirds of the country struggles with, while at least three hundred thousand Americans die each year from obesity related diseases. Reasons for this matter are definitely not hard to comprehend, seeing as how the U.S. food industry vigorously markets high-sugar, high-fat, super-sized foods. While communities today are encouraging driving rather than walking, physical education is becoming a dropped requirement in school as fattening foods are being welcomed onto the campus. Modern day children are exercising much less; instead the kids spending their time indoors watching television, playing video games, or playing computer games, rather than spending time outdoors or playing a sport. With Americans spending billions of dollars on healthcare, the health of millions is not the only thing at risk.
The first example of research clearly states that obesity is the fastest growing cause of illness and death in the country. Unites States Surgeon General Richard Carmona states “Obesity is the fastest growing cause of illness and death in the United States. It is associated with at least 300,000 deaths a year, causing more than 30 obesity-related diseases ranging from heart disease and stroke to arthritis and breathing problems” (Greenblatt).
