My topic is the role of jails and prisons on inmates with mental health needs. The United States incarcerates hundreds of thousands of inmates suffering from mental illness, and jails and prisons are struggling to provide for these individuals.   Annually, there are approximately 2.1 million bookings of individuals who suffer mental illness, and that number does not include institutions on the state and federal levels. At one time, huge state hospitals housed the mentally ill. But, when they closed in the 1970s, community-based care was supposed to step in. Instead, the mentally ill were released to the streets, where they often got into troubleWhile many facilities are focusing on opening a hospital within themselves to provide the care that is needed, certain individuals are calling it a crime, arguing that a jail is not a therapeutic environment. According to the Justice Department, people with psychological disorders are much more likely to be sexually victimized by fellow inmates. Statistics show that "An estimated 3.6 percent of [jail inmates], identified with serious psychological distress reported inmate-on-inmate sexual victimization, compared to 0.7 percent of inmates with no indication of mental health problems." Another argument that branches off of this idea is re-entry into society after incarceration. Studies have shown that after release, former inmates fall immediately back into the same patterns that got them into jail in the first place. Now, many cities have added training for police, and created mental health courts that divert people from jail. Personally, I don’t think jails and prisons should have mental facilities within them. As mentioned, a jail or prison is definitely not a therapeutic environment for anyone. If these individuals are to be dismissed after their time and expected to not come back, they should not be treated in a mental facility within a jail or prison. They would only rely to come back so often as they needed help along...
