The biological approach believes that treatment should be physical and one of its main treatments is drug treatment. It assumes that abnormality is caused by a chemical imbalance, meaning too much or too little of a neurotransmitter. Drug treatment works by increasing or decreasing levels of neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that transmit impulses across the microscopic gaps between nerve cells called synapses. Changes in the brain's neurotransmitter systems lead to changes in moods, feelings, perception and behaviour.
Some drugs work by increasing the levels of neurotransmitter as low levels of serotonin are thought to cause depression so SSRI drugs such as Prozac are used to block the re-uptake pump in the synapse. This reduces the rate of re-absorption therefore increasing serotonin levels by allowing more serotonin to attach to receptors. Other drugs such as anti-psychotics block the post-synaptic receptor sites so that not as much dopamine can cross the synapse. This relieves the symptoms of schizophrenia by decreasing excessive dopamine levels.
Many drug treatments are cost effective, easy to use and there is much evidence to show that drugs can be effective in a range of psychological disorders, such as up to 70 per cent of depressed people respond to drug therapy. However drugs don’t cure the disorder and only target the biological changes and symptoms. This means that if someone with depression comes off the drug the symptoms are likely to re-occur, as the drugs do no alter any environmental or personal factors that can lead to depression. This is shown with the use of anti-psychotic drugs, as symptoms of schizophrenia will return in about 80 per cent of patients who come off the drug. Most drugs used to treat psychological disorders have problems of side effects, such as movement disorders resembling Parkinson’s disease linked to chlorpromazine, an anti-psychotic drug and outbursts of violence and suicide linked to SSRIs an anti-depressant...
