Papers for the undocumented
In the last four hundred or so years the Americas has been populated by people coming from all over the world looking for freedom and happiness which many have found. However in these days the same types of people, people who are looking for a better life, are denied the ability to achieve and enjoy that same happiness. It is true that most immigrants are fairly welcomed to the Americas but there is one type who has been and continues to suffer, which is referred to as “illegal immigrants”. Illegal immigrants are undocumented immigrants; meaning that they cannot participate in any sort of governmental issue. Because they do not have a voice to defend themselves, they have been accused of bringing the country in a down spiral. Realistically however, they are not the cause of the country’s struggle; undocumented immigrants are capable of pushing the country toward a positive path. For the advantage of the country as a whole, the United States’ government needs to neutralize all undocumented immigrants.
It is estimated to be close to 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States (Pawlick & Finley). It’s a fact that these 12 million undocumented immigrants are here and that it will be impractical to deport them all, thus the government needs to do what is best for the country which is giving citizenship to all that are undocumented. According to the New York Times, it will cost the government at least $94 billion to deport the undocumented residents (Nizza). This does not take into consideration cost of tracking the undocumented and the forces needed to accomplish the task (Nizza). Rather than spending billions of dollars on a cause that will yield no positive effect and putting millions of parents and their children on a constant run due to fear of being deported or imprisoned, the government should grant them amnesty.
