Running head: PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS OF TEACHING
My role as an educator is to not only teach the children the required subjects, but to guide them as a role model, as well as inspire them to reach their fullest potential. Inspiration is not simply a switch that one flips on at the beginning of the day and flips back off after school is over, it is a constant state of being which makes others want to be a part of something. Whether that something is a lecture, an activity, a discussion, or a project, that student feels the desire to be actively involved, not only because that is what is expected of them, but because they feel welcome and intrigued by the learning process. This will all be accomplished by following the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession.
During my field visit to St. Vincent St. Mary High School, I witnessed many of these standards being utilized effectively. The first of Seven Standards is that teachers understand student learning and development and respect the diversity of the students they teach.("Ohio standards for," ) A thorough understanding of how students learn is essential to quality teaching. Effective teachers must understand the processes and strategies students use to construct knowledge, and use this understanding to create learning activities appropriate for students’ ages, abilities and learning styles. Effective teachers understand the impact of students’ backgrounds and experiences on their learning.
The second standard is content knowledge. ("Ohio standards for," ) A deep understanding of content is essential for teachers to have the power to positively impact student learning and achievement. Effective teachers demonstrate a deep and reflective understanding of content- specific practices, processes and vocabulary..
