Introduction
The way a person perceives himself or herself plays a vital role in his or her behavior, values, beliefs, and the choices he or she makes throughout his or her life. Social psychology helps define why that is through scientific methods and the study of individuals and small groups of people (Berger, 2008). Social psychology is sometimes confused with sociology, folk wisdom, and personality psychology but social psychology focuses on situations and the impact that the social environment and group interactions have on behaviors and attitudes.
Social Psychology
According to Myers (2010), social psychology "is a science that studies the influences of our situations, with special attention to how we view and affect one another" (p. 4). Social psychology conducts experiments, it focuses on how people view and affect each other, and it studies how people think, what a person's influences are, and relationships a person has. Social interactions and social perceptions are key factors in understanding social behavior. Social psychology focuses on a large range of social topics such as social perception, group behavior, nonverbal behavior, leadership, aggression, conformity, and prejudice (Myers, 2010).
Social psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on how social occurrences influence people and how a person interacts with others. The way a person thinks the rest of the world perceives himself or herself affects that person’s behaviors, choices, and beliefs. Social psychology can help understand why groups impact a person’s actions and choices. It studies social perception, social conditioning, and social interaction. Social psychology not only studies group behavior, it also studies individual behavior, and it studies all types of topics about social interactions and looking at oneself (Berger, 2008).
