Examine the reasons why the religious and political leaders put Jesus to death:
  When looking at the motives behind the actions of the Jews towards Jesus, what can immediately be established is the fact that they were concerned with the claims of Messiahship. In John 1:22, the Jewish priest’s question John the Baptist by asking him “Are you Elijah?” and ““Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” which clearly indicates that the Jews were wary about proclaimed Messiahs and thus it sets a precedent for their relationship with Jesus. Furthermore, their concern is consolidated in John 2 where Jesus clears the Temple and publically claims the Messiahship which connects Jesus to the Old Testament in that God in Jeremiah 7:11questions the sin in his “House”. “My Father’s house” and “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days” is indicative of replacement theology in that Jesus is replacing the Old covenant with a new one of love and grace and thereby implying the fulfilment of the redemption of God that Passover itself represents. This claim of authority would thus have been criticised by the Jews since for them, it defiles the sacred nature of Yahweh. Moreover, by doing this, Jesus is transcending Judaism by enforcing holiness as something apart from worldly things such as wealth and privilege which the Jewish leaders use as a foundation for their power. It is this threat that led to the persecution of Jesus.
  Moreover, this antagonism also stems from the Sabbath healings, which involve Jesus breaking the Jewish Law, as they are examples of the usurping and humiliating the Jewish leaders’ authority by showing divine love e.g. the healing of the lame man in chapter 5. Thus, we can see that the Jewish rejection and persecution of Jesus shows that they have never heard nor seen God, or else they would have recognized him in his Son due to the fact that rabbinic arguments confess that God is...
