Dear Mrs. Driscoll:
In your class, this semester, among many other things, I learned about the various components of the
writing process. This segment provided me with a wealth of useful information, which will be of
enormous help to me as I continue my studies as well as when I re-enter the workforce. I found the
section on prewriting especially helpful. Prior to taking this class, I had lacked the skills to develop and
organize an essay. Now, because of what I have learned about the different methods for gathering
ideas about a topic, and then organizing those ideas, writing has become easier. I still struggle with
timed writing; coming up with enough ideas about a subject to fulfill the requirements of the writing
assignment within the allotted time. This, I believe, is an area that will improve over time, as I continue
writing. Reading the book examples of the different types of essays illustrated what was talked about in
class each day, and provided a guide for writing assignments, as well. Learning about figurative
language and how to use it in my writing has also helped me to become a better writer. Aside from the
writing process, we also learned about complete sentences and fragments, comma splices, and
subject/verb agreement. This review was very helpful, as well.
The writing assignments helped me put into practice what I learned in class. I particularly enjoyed

describe, not only my mother’s appearance, but also all of the traits that I find endearing about her.
These insights into her character convey an image of her that a photograph could...
