In his article, “Family Values in America”, Dudley Erskine Devlin presents the readers with two different common opinions on causes and solutions for the decline of family values in the USA nowadays. He says, some social critics offer us to rediscovery the traditional values of the nuclear family with a father, a mother and children. Others argue that the entire communities have responsibility for raising children and our culture need to be adjustment. Devlin also adds his own argument: “We just need to back off and give the kids some space.” I both approve and disapprove the author’s reviews in certain points.
Devlin shows us some facts and examples of divorce rates, one-parent family and murderous kids in America. He says that some social experts consider above examples as evidence for the fall of the traditional family structure and the rise of materialistic, selfish and violence. They believe that family values have disappeared because of the decline of nuclear families with a working father and a mother staying at home to raise 2.5 kids. According to them, all new forms of family, such as one-parent family, “blended” family with children from multiple marriages, family with an adultery or workaholic parent and so on, has make an offspring generation of “cheating, stealing, or hurting other people to get what they want.” Therefore, the solution is a return to the nuclear family. The author also refers to the second group of reformers who desire to a “whole village” approach and oriented culture. This group argues that the whole community including grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers, friends, shop owners and television producers etc. should raise and care of the children. The author says that both two groups have exaggerated the problem too much. He states that there is no clear relationship between what form of a person’s family and their ethics or behaviors and we have no need to reform the culture. We just “go with the flow”.
