Why Wearing a Seat Belt is Important

Each year there are over 40,000 automobile accidents in the U.S alone. In 2006 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that, due to seat belt use, approximately 15,383 people were saved from fatal injury during car crashes (Mackenzie). The world's first seat belt law was put in place in 1970, in the state of Victoria, Australia, making the wearing of a seat belt compulsory for drivers and front-seat passengers. Wearing a seatbelt is one of the best decisions a person could make when they get into a vehicle for a few reasons; seat belts are the number one safety device, seat belts prevent any person from being ejected from the car in high-speed accidents and lastly wearing a seat belt will save many peoples lives.Seat belts are the number one safety device in vehicles to this date, even with the new technology that is invented. People may think they are still fully protected because the vehicle they are in has an airbag, but airbags are less effective and may be useless if the person is not wearing a seat belt (Marie). When the seat belt is not worn the body that is in the vehicle will not be in a position that will allow the person to receive the protection of an airbag, especially if they are not buckled into the seat. There is some belief that seat belts do not save lives and that they might do more harm then good. There are some rare instances when a seat belt has negatively impacted the chance of survival in a crash, but researches have shown that seat belts are the best chance of survival in a crash (DeLisa, 2010).Seat belts prevent any person from being ejected from a vehicle in high-speed accidents. “However, they work best when simple safety guidelines are followed.
