Everyone Deserves a Second Chance

Crimes are committed everyday all across the United States. Both Juveniles and Adults make life choices that potential shut the doors on freedom. The offenses range from Property (Burglary, Larceny, and Motor Vehicle) to Violent (Murder, forcible rape, Robbery, Aggravated assault) crimes. These people are convicted and sent to prison to serve a sentence. These individuals can be released on bail to await trial/ charges or sent back into general population to try to get back to routine.   With unemployment in America at an all time high, American people are competing for jobs. Lack of Degrees, qualification, and criminal background can determine employment. Ultimately, people can be trained either through an educational program or on the job training. Clearing up someone’s criminal record is not as easy. People are denied the opportunity to show off their skills due to prior criminal offenses. These individuals are overlooked and not considered. Not to defend the wrong choices that an individual makes, but everyone deserves a second chance.
In the news feature Join Together entitled “‘Second Chance Act’ Wins Broad Praise, Call for Funding” Bob Curley makes reference to President Bush quotes.   President Bush states before signing measure into law, “We believe that even those who have struggled with a dark past can find brighter days ahead…One way we act on that beliefs is by helping former prisoners who’ve paid for their crimes- -we help them build new lives as productive members of our society.” If what the United States former President Bush says is true, why does society continue to imprison the ex-offender for time already served? Although, there are many things to take into consideration, society tends to continue to punish ex-offenders for past indiscretions.
