Shigellosis is an acute gram negative form of bacteria typically resulting in food poisoning caused by infection of the shigella bacterium. (Swapan 2005) It is the 3rd most common case of bacterial infection in the world and one of the leading bacterial causes of diarrhea worldwide. Though there is remarkably little noted about the first recorded case of shigellosis, it is to this day a well-known notifiable disease. It was discovered by and ironically named after Japanese microbiologist Dr. Kiyoshi Shiga in 1897. Dr. Shiga was, at the time, investigating an outbreak of bloody diarrhea. It is closely related to the Salmonella family and exhibits similar characteristics and symptoms. The majority of individuals infected with shigellosis do so by coming into contact with fecal matter that contains the bacteria and not properly washing their hands, then putting them into their mouths.(MMWR 2005) This is perhaps one of the reasons Shigellosis is referred to as the ‘Third World’ disease as its poor hand washing habits and eating contaminated food that can be a huge contributing factor to contracting the bacteria. The bacteria can be found in a variety of places. Shigellosis is mostly contracted in places where condition is crowded and sanitation is poor. Places such as day care centers, nursing homes, military units and refugee camps are extremely likely to have this problem. This is likely to occur among toddlers who are not fully toilet trained.   Food becomes contaminated by infected food handlers who do not wash their hands often or correctly.
Rates of Incidence
According to the CDC, there were 4.3 infections per 100,000 in a given population. There were an estimated 494,000 illnesses recorded annually in The United States alone. 131,000 of those were transmitted through contaminated food. The rate of infection in the United States of America has not declined in the past ten years. As of 2013, there is a recoded 18,000 total cases that are known of. Shigellosis...
