"A celebrated popular author and a controversial public figure", Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was one of the most prolific writers of his era due to his creation of "perhaps the most universally recognized fictional character of English literature", Sherlock Holmes. (Lellenberg: The Quest) Born in May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Doyle thought of himself as an Englishman, but with Irish descendants. Conan Doyle grew up "in the hardy and bracing atmosphere of poverty"(Doyle: Intro) watching his father, Charles Altamont Doyle; a civil servant if Scotland’s Boards of Works, struggle with alcohol which led to the deterioration of his family. Doyle's mother had the character his father lacked. “A gentle but determined personality, she instilled in her son strong sense of personal honor, a lifelong fascination with a romantically conceived past and an admirable if anachronistic sense of chivalry that he applied in daily life." (Lellenberg: Arthur) Doyle "was such a book lover” and the "instinct for storytelling, spring from my mother" as Jon L. Lellenberg noted in A life in Letters.
As a child he was sent to a strict, brutal, Jesuit boarding school; a Catholic school that has the tradition of making ordinary boys into extraordinary men. In 1879 he enrolled at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, achieving a bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery in two years. While he was still a student, he became a ship surgeon, where he kept writing and his short story “The Mystery of the Sasassa Valley”, was the first work that was published in 1879.He traveled the Artic and Africa, which became the “first real outstanding adventure" of his life Doyle says in the book “Memories and Adventures”; in fact, he based most of his stories according to his adventures.
