Social Psychology Paper
      This paper will discuss a scenario that was given to students of a Psychology class within the University of Phoenix. The scenario given spoke about a young girl named Sarah who is a sophomore in high school. She has always obeyed the rules of her home and has just started her sophomore year in high school. She has met new friends and decided to go out with these new friends. When it came time for Sarah to go home (her curfew) her friends stated that they were going to another party and Sarah really wanted to keep being invited by these new friends. Sarah decided to go along, and later that evening met someone, witnessed a fight, and then went home to decide whether, or not, the whole evening was really worth her breaking curfew.
      The factors that contributed to Sarah always following her curfew are based on her upbringing, and the fact that she lived in an affluent part of the town. Since she is from an affluent neighborhood, she probably has friends that also obey their parents and the rules set forth. This type of behavior would be considered the “social norm” (Carter & Seifert, 2013). Sarah has never broken her curfew before because she had never been asked to, and all of her other friends probably would never think of breaking curfew either. This might be one of the reasons why she is displaying some sort of cognitive dissonance (Carter & Seifert, 2013).
      Cognitive dissonance is “the discomfort you feel when you hold two competing ideas at the same time” (Carter & Seifert, 2013). Sarah displayed this behavior when she arrived at home and realized that she had done something wrong, and wondered if doing this was really worth the trouble she was going to be in for breaking curfew.
