Social research is a type of research that is used to study subjects, such as people, in a social aspect.   The structure of a research project is made up of different parts.   Also, one important element of a research project is its validity.   Validity refers to how logical the research is.   It can be applied to both the design and the methods.   The research methods knowledge base website provides more insight on the components of research and how validity relates to some of the components.   The website was helpful to better understanding research sampling and design.
According to Trochim (2006), sampling is the process of selecting units, such as people, out of the desired population.   There are two types of sampling.   One type is probability sampling, which randomly selects a sample.   This type of sampling is considered to be more accurate.   The other type of sampling is non probability sampling, which does not select the sample randomly.   The website provides insight on what type of validity a sampling has.   Sampling has external validity.   This means the evidence is generalized and can be used in other situations or for other people.   In a sampling model,   there are three steps to providing evidence.   First, you must identify the population.   Then, you take a sample from the population and conduct research on that sample.   Last, you can generalize the results back to the population.   With external validity, there is the possibility of being wrong.   As a result, there are three major threats to external validity.   Those threats are people, places, or times.
Design is another main topic discussed on the website that was helpful.   According to Trochim (2006), research design provides the information that holds the research project together.   There are three types of research design.   One type is randomized, or true, experiment.   In this experiment, the subjects are randomly assigned to a group.   The next type is quasi-experiment.   In this experiment, the...
