INTRODUCTION

1. Irrespective of era, human race has always experienced stress. In earlier days there were natural calamities, epidemics and survival demands which caused stress. Later, masses of human beings started killing themselves through wars and skirmishes and as per Dr David Barlow, in the present millennium, it is very likely that the number one threat to health and well being will not be cancer or heart disease but stress. Prolonged deployment of soldiers in dangerous situations and hostile environment increase stress levels which can either motivate a person or cause tension and frustration, thus having a direct bearing on the performance of duties.

2. Men in the armed forces are often exposed to stress. Almost every day, scenes of injuries, deaths, destruction, isolation and uncertainty of the future confront them. These frustrations and tensions are then manifested in individual behavior which not only influence their mental peace but also causes emotional disturbance, thus adversely effecting their combat effectiveness. Stress affects everyone, irrespective of rank, age and seniority.

3. All human reactions are in response to stress of one type or other. It is the ability to cope, which determines when stress is experienced. In sub conventional operations stress is a common phenomenon experienced by all ranks. One of the many manifestations of stress is suicide or fratricide. Since 2004, 282 soldiers have been killed in militant attacks whilst, 408 soldiers have taken their lives, killed colleagues or died after colleagues ran amok. Though India has not fought a full-blown war in decades, however the force has been continuously bogged down in fighting domestic insurgencies, managing natural disasters and quelling civilian rioting.
