Texting: A Menace to Development of Teenagers Language Skills
      Texting has become a principal form of communication among many people (especially teenagers) in America. This new form of communication is now extremely important and irresistible to most 21st century teenagers. Although texting is one important function of a mobile phone, it did not accompany the invention of the mobile phone in America in the early 1970’s. However, texting did become prevalent among American youths after Raina Fortin invented it in the year 1989. Texting has since been used for several purposes including inter-employee communication in business, use by politicians to transmit mass messages and most importantly, it is used by teenagers to interact with each other both negatively and positively. Albeit, calling is the primary reason mobile phones were invented, most teenagers prefer texting to calling because it allows them to change their ideas as frequently as they want. Teenagers can easily delete unsent messages yet it is nearly impossible for them to change ideas that have already been spoken through a phone call. Teenagers also prefer texting because it allows them hold conversations with each other (especially with the opposite sex) without being physically and emotionally present. These two significant teen preferences have skyrocketed the use of text messaging in America.
According to studies by well known researchers, Kevin Durkin, Gina Conti-Ramsdent and Allan Walker, 46% of 8 to 18-year-olds report sending text messages, and those who text estimate that they devote about an hour and a half daily to sending and receiving texts (49). Teenagers spend roughly an hour and a half, which is about 6.25% of an entire 24-hour day, texting. Nevertheless, these numbers continue to grow.
