2010 CIA Application Package | Culinary Arts Certificate Program
This booklet contains the information you need to apply for admission to the culinary arts certificate program at The Culinary Institute of America, San Antonio. The program is open to all individuals who are at least 18 years of age and have a serious interest in pursuing or continuing a professional career in the culinary arts. The CIA will make a balanced judgment of your commitment to learning and your career goals based on your application file. The college reserves the right to verify any information you provide for review.
THINGS TO KNOW
• Our Admissions Committee reviews all applications, which are valid for one year. Please note that the CIA does not return any materials sent as part of the admission review process. Do not submit original diplomas and certificates, as they will not be returned. Please submit all documents in English. • All applicants must demonstrate their proficiency in the English language at a level adequate for success at the CIA. If your primary spoken language is other than English, the submission of Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores may be required as part of your application.
THE EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
The CIA requires that you have, prior to starting the certificate program, six months of hands-on food preparation experience in a kitchen in which at least 50% of the food is made to order on the premises. Some ways to gain this experience include working in a commercial kitchen (restaurant, bakery, hospital, and college foodservice), volunteering in a soup kitchen, doing an apprenticeship, working for a caterer, or completing the hands-on requirement of your high school’s vocational culinary program.
