2011 Unified Theme “Those Who Serve”
As Mahatma Gandhi once expressed, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Throughout life, one may experience the feelings of displacement and loneliness, but in the quest to find oneself, there is also the opportunity to find comfort by lightening the hearts and minds of strangers each and every day.   In his rebellious teen years, Eboo Patel, a young Muslim in America , begins to find his identity when he comes to believe that “…faith is about service, not rituals” (Patel 29). Soon thereafter, Patel developed and organized the Interfaith Youth Core, a movement designed to integrate today’s youth with the hope that mankind may coexist together despite differences in their backgrounds and beliefs.. He believed that with a common understanding,   people might establish new friendships that are based on serving those in need to positively affect humanity as a whole. Together, humanity can create innovative ideas for serving others in society, it can “meet hate with love,” and flourish beyond one’s wildest dreams (140). Eboo Patel believes in providing service at a young age, and working to better the world by encouraging people of all races, religions, and situations to serve their communities in order to aid those who are in need.
In order to make the most difference while serving, one must immerse himself into the project wholeheartedly, like Patel demonstrates in his story, Acts of Faith. While volunteering at his local YMCA, the then young Patel quickly acquires something new and appealing about the lives of people unfamiliar to him. He begins to cheer for someone other than simply himself. Patel embraces the unfamiliar and dives into developing an appreciation and understanding toward other’s beliefs (religious pluralism). Among numerous other service endeavors, after college he traveled around the United States, visiting cities, and “volunteering at Catholic Worker houses along the way”...
