The Victorian Period was a time known for their beautiful classical music, elegance and their contributions in the literary field. Reigned by Queen Victoria, a sophisticated woman and ruler, the era became known for its complexity. Throughout that time, the writing field was prospering tremendously. Writers such as Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, Robert Browning, and Robert Louis Stevenson helped contribute to the great success. Their heart wrenching novels and captivating poetry aided the literature in that era to flourish. Those are just the positive sides of the story; the Victorians also hold dark secrets. Like today, the drug issue was also a huge problem back in that time. The over use of opium for pain and stress relief was common in England. Opium was also utilized in medical treatment and it was so regularly being misused that it leads to many tragic deaths. Stevenson, an opium and cocaine user illustrated the devastating results drug usage in his Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde novel. He was able to express his life struggle with drug through Dr. Jekyll character. Stevenson was one of many drug users back in the Victorian Period. Despite all his troubles, he was able to maintain himself and make an impact in the literature world. Robert Louis Stevenson's life experiences and drug problems in the Victorian Period helped him paint his literature career.
A daily life of a peasant was actually not as simple as some may think it was. For a peasant during the Victorian time era, you were always considered a peasant because of the family you came from and there was no way that you could ever “move up in ranks” so it was a real struggle to make a living for a full family let alone yourself.
