Wilderness programs are an extreme substitute to juvenile behaviors that are unacceptable. The teen could be showing behaviors of being angry, defiant, sad or grieving, manipulative, a teenager that is failing school, rebellious teen, out-of-control teen, impulsive teen, or someone using drugs and alcohol. Many psychologists and psychiatrists believe that wilderness programs are specialized in helping troubled and rebellious teens to overcome their conduct or emotional issues. "Wilderness programs help young people to identify and work through their internal conflicts and emotional obstacles that have kept them from responding to parental efforts, schools, and treatment" (SUWS). This special program, SUWS, has two unique programs to bring attention to the precise necessities of clients at different levels of their progressive voyage. The first phase is a therapeutic program that lasts 42 days. This is for children that are between the ages of eleven and thirteen. The children that attended these programs must be showing signs or behaviors that are negative or they must be revealing unhealthy coping mechanisms. The second phase provides “experimental wilderness therapy” for children ages fourteen to seventeen. This specific program includes personalized therapy, rope courses, equine therapy, close supervision, and community volunteerism.
According to Sandra Wilson and Mark Lipsey, wilderness programs exemplify this learning by doing idea and a straightforward form: participants are immersed in activities that directly challenge their skills and self-concept. Wilderness programs have two goals; the first is to eliminate antisocial behavior, the second is to relate to group orientation.
